Pulmonary function tests, also called spirometry or lung function tests, measure how well the lungs bring in air, move oxygen into the bloodstream and release air back out of the lungs. A pulmonary function test generally involves breathing through a mouthpiece into an instrument called a spirometer which measures the amount and rate of air that is breathed in and out.
