My Experience

Our 14-month-old daughter was getting recurring ear infections. She had been on a number of different medications to treat each infection but the fluid wasn’t draining and therefore bacteria was building up and causing the next ear infection.

We knew the procedure would be a very short. However, the waiting period before they took our daughter to the OR was stressful. It was her first surgical procedure so as parents it was a very nerve racking experience. Once she was put out, the actual procedure only lasted about 10 minutes.

Afterward, when I went down to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to get her after the procedure, she was crying uncontrollable. The doctor and nurses said this was not an unusual reaction coming out of anesthesia.

My Advice

Know that it is very quick procedure. Also, when stressed in the hospital, remember that it is being done as a long-term fix to prevent future ear infections.
