My Experience

I was having a routine colonoscopy. In addition, they were going to do an endoscopy for acid reflux evaluation at the same time.

The preparation for the colonoscopy consisted of taking Dulcolax tablets plus Miralax powder mixed with Gatorade. No preparation was required for the endoscopy. I had a very bad experience with the colonoscopy prep. I suffered from nausea, headache, severe stomach cramps, chest pain and I refluxed the Gatorade. In addition, the “cleaning out” portion was much more intense and lasted much longer than the directions advised. Four years ago I used a different preparation and suffered no side effects.

Right before the procedure I had conversations with the doctor and the anesthesiologist. The procedures both went extremely well. The staff was attentive, caring and very professional.

After the colonoscopy, I was thoroughly counseled by the doctor and his staff. I still suffered from the side effects of the preparation until the next morning. I was extremely tired and slept off and on the rest of the day.

My Advice

Regarding preparation: Everyone is different. What didn’t work for me might well be perfect for others. As a matter of fact, one of my sons used the exact same prep as me and had no difficulty. I would suggest that anyone undergoing a colonoscopy not count on going to work afterwards or doing anything else but relaxing at home that day. For example, driving is not permitted for 12 hours.
